Why School Finance Matters to Parents, Teachers, Classified, and Everyone
"A budget is a reflection of your values and priorities." — Barack Obama
"They can steal your money, but they cannot steal the knowledge that you learned from schools!" — Thavorn Suokprasert
"If you think education is expensive, try ignorance." — Delaine Eastin
In 2026, news reports of school districts facing financial hardship are multiplying. Some are confronting potential employee strikes. The California Department of Education is currently tracking 8 districts at risk of being unable to meet their financial obligations next year, and another 45 that face the same threat. Teachers, classified staff, and parents are all worried — about paychecks, about program cuts, and about what school closures would mean for their children.
Not everyone needs to master every detail of our school finance system. California operates one of the largest public school systems in the country — and possibly the world — with programs designed to serve students of every background and need. But understanding the basics is no longer optional for those whose jobs and children depend on it.
This website provides plain-language explanations so that parents can fight for more funding, teachers and classified staff can understand where their money comes from and how to advocate for themselves, and administrators and policymakers can make better decisions about how to allocate resources from state, federal, and local revenues.
All data comes from official sources: the California Department of Education, the Department of Finance, and the Legislative Analyst's Office. The decisions on how to build a budget are never easy — but a shared understanding of the funding is an essential first step. Together, we can make sure that every child has the resources to reach their full potential.
